Cadzow/SSA filtering

Post by Michael_Seman » Thu Dec 07, 2017 6:40 am

This was called FX Eigenimage noise suppression by Trickett, he later renamed
it to FX Cadzow filtering. Saachi also published it as FX Singular Spectrum
Analysis. Trickett's company was taken over by Fugro, which was then swallowed
by CGG. I can't see it in CGG's list of processing modules, but I presume
they offer the FXY (3D) version, as they spruiked it in a conference paper
five years ago. I looked at some
other commercial processing packages, and don't see they offer it either. I
can only find patent for the 3D FXY version, presumably because it was an old
algorithm used outside of seismology. I noted that this patent lapsed this
year due to failure to pay fees. I presume whoever ended up with patent
rights did not think it worth enforcing.
So I coded it up myself and tried it out. Yes it does suppress random noise
quite well, but does require lots of CPU time (more than FX decon or TF denoise
operating in a similar framework). Perhaps that prevented it catching on 15
years ago. Second disadvantage: it can actually make the first and last trace
of an ensemble worse. I know such edge effects are fairly common in world of
signal processing. But since it preserves amplitudes better than FX decon,
I expected it to be more widespread.

I think its available in a number of processing packages, having done a quick google, and there's a few recent papers discussing it.
There's a lot of techniques that drop in and out of fashion favour - can you post a before and after showing your results?

I put up some examples here:
