Magnetics on a Landfill

Dear Geophysicists,

I am working on the exploration of landfills, in this context I would like to do a magnetic survey on a landfill (1m clay overburden) of mixed waste. My institute owns a fluxgate magnetometer, but I am thinking on using a Proton precession magentometer for total-field. My aim is detect ferrous metals. What do you think (regarding remanence)? Please post your opinion on which kind of magnetometer I should use and preferably why! ;)

I would use a Proton precession magnetometer since it's more accurate (better resolution) than a fluxgate magnetometer. The precision of a Proton magnetometer is usually better than 1nT, while a fluxgate magnetometer's typical precision is around 10nT.
